INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROTOTYPE

From the mid-1950s, the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) responded to the shortage of carriages with conversion programs for 3yg and 4yg carriages. Initially, intercity express and express train carriages were developed; only later were local passenger carriages (n-cars) created. The demand for n-cars increased due to the limited service life of the 3yg carriages, and the first prototypes were built in 1958. Based on previous developments, three basic types were created. The n-cars were made of stainless steel (V2A), with a peacock eye pattern and a silver surface, hence the nickname "Silverlings". Minden-Deutz-type bogies were equipped with block brakes (MD42), later replaced by disc brakes (MD43). Double entrances with swing doors were introduced for faster passenger exchange.
