INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROTOTYPE

From the mid-1950s, the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) responded to the shortage of carriages with conversion programs for 3yg and 4yg carriages. Initially, the new construction programs focused on intercity express and express train carriages. Only later did capacity become available for the development of new local transport carriages (n-cars). Due to the growing demand and the limited service life of the 3yg carriages, the first n-car prototypes were created in 1958. These led to the development of three basic types with different seating arrangements. The n-cars were primarily made of stainless steel (V2A), which, due to its corrosion protection, made painting under the windows unnecessary. The brushed finish and silver surface led to their nickname "Silberlinge" (Silverlings). The cars had Minden-Deutz bogies, initially with block brakes (MD42) and later with disc brakes (MD43). To speed up passenger boarding and alighting, double doors with swing doors were installed at approximately one-third of the car's length. Due to space constraints, the BD4nf driver's cabs were redesigned, resulting in a driving trailer with a full-fledged driver's cab but no connecting passage in 1972. From the 1980s onward, the modernization of the more than 20-year-old cars began, with the introduction of the Hannover design. Driving trailers were also rebuilt to allow for more flexible use with diesel or electric traction. In the 1990s, the n-cars underwent further modernization, including new livery and improvements to the driving trailers for push-pull operation.
