INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROTOTYPE

From the mid-1950s, the German Federal Railway (Deutsche Bundesbahn) responded to the shortage of carriages with conversion programs for 3yg and 4yg carriages. Initially, intercity express and express train carriages were developed; only later were local passenger carriages (n-cars) created. The demand for n-cars increased due to the limited service life of the 3yg carriages, and the first prototypes were built in 1958. Based on previous developments, three basic types were created. The n-cars were made of stainless steel (V2A), with a peacock eye pattern and a silver finish, hence the nickname "Silberlinge" (Silverlings). Minden-Deutz bogies were initially equipped with block brakes (MD42), later replaced by disc brakes (MD43). Double entrances with swing doors were introduced for faster passenger exchange. Between 1960 and 1980, approximately 5,000 n-cars were built by various manufacturers and at the Karlsruhe and Hanover repair shops. The BD4nf driver's cabs were initially cramped and were converted into control cars with a full-fledged driver's cab in 1972 at the Karlsruhe repair shop. Modernization began in the 1980s with the new Hannover design, mint green paintwork, and plastic frames for sliding windows. Control cars were redesigned at the Wittenberge workshop, based on the DB standard cab of the BR 111. Many "rabbit hutches" and "Karlsruhe heads" were converted to "Wittenberg heads." DB AG also integrated regular second-class carriages into the conversion program to meet the demand for push-pull trains.
