The new 1040 003-4 of the ÖBB from Rivarossi

After the Second World War, the re-established Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) carried out an extensive electrification program. This led to the construction of the 1040 series, which was based on the 1045, 1145, and 1245 series. Thus, Austria's first post-war locomotive was created.

The locomotives were initially used for hauling express and freight trains; however, the former proved too strenuous for the machines in the long run. Later, they were relegated from express service and relegated to secondary duties. The last locomotives of the 1040 series were only retired in 2003. The new Rivarossi model HR2938/S is the previously unproduced version as the ÖBB 1040 003-4 in Vermillion livery with UIC operating number and the ÖBB emblem affectionately known as the "Pflatsch" in railway jargon. The locomotive features a skew-wound five-pole motor with flywheels for optimal running characteristics, all-axle drive and current collection, a digital interface according to NEM 662 (Next-18), sprung metal buffers, robust yet delicate pantographs, and separately applied metal grab irons. True to the prototype, the Sécheron spring drive is also engraved on the wheel discs. The sound version HR2938S comes with a ZIMO sound decoder. The sounds were specially created for Rivarossi from unique sound recordings of the ÖBB 1040 series.
