The Italian state railways had ABB technomasio build 20 dual-system locomotives in order to use them in cross-border and cross-system traffic between Italy and Austria and Germany. These high-performance locomotives reach a speed of 220 km/h and are capable of producing 6 MW and 5.5 MW of power under 3 kV direct current or 15 kV 16 2/3 Hz alternating current.
The machines, which were put into operation in 1997, are still in use in Italy today and largely feature the current Mercitalia Rail paint scheme.
