INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROTOTYPE
It was only quite late, in 1936/37, that the Cologne Railway Division (Rbd Köln) was assigned locomotives 01 192–198 for traffic on the Rhine. 01 193 was accepted on December 21, 1936, and assigned to the Deutzerfeld depot. The locomotives were also responsible for hauling the legendary "Rheingold Express," a task they took over from the BR 18.5. The Offenburg depot had already been operating this service with Class 01 locomotives on the Upper Rhine as far as Basel since 1930. 01 193 survived the war in Cologne and was transferred to Hamm in 1948. Here, along with numerous sister locomotives, it operated on the east-west Aachen-Hanover line until 1959, when it was transferred to Paderborn. In 1960, it received a new high-performance boiler in Nied. After only five years, in 1964, it was moved on to Rheine. As with Paderborn, it reversed direction in Kassel and, heading north, in Bremen, Emden, and Oldenburg. For service in the Netherlands, the Rheine-based 01 locomotives often had a 2´2T30 tender. The increasing allocation of 01.10 locomotives rendered the 01 redundant; 001 193-2 was already decommissioned on June 21, 1968. Gustav Ahrens GmbH scrapped it in Essen-Rellinghausen in September and October 1969.
