The Class 1216 (Taurus 3) electric locomotives are multi-system, three-phase AC universal locomotives based on the Siemens EuroSprinter family of locomotives. The exterior and high-speed bogies were adopted from the first two Taurus generations, but with some detailed modifications.
From 2006 to 2008, 50 locomotives were delivered to the ÖBB. They are designed for operation on lines with a network voltage of 15 kV/16.7 Hz, 25 kV/50 Hz, and 3 kV DC. The maximum power output is 6,400 kW, and the top speed is 230 km/h. It is used in national and international passenger and freight transport.
For each country, the locomotive must also be equipped with the respective country-specific packages. These packages include the special equipment for train radio, display, voice announcements, train protection systems, signage, and additional features. In addition to being used in Austria and Germany, the locomotives of variant A (1216.0) are equipped with an additional country-specific package for Italy and Slovenia.
