New in 2025:
Starting in 1969, it was the turn of the Class 03 steam locomotives to be rebuilt to ensure continued service.
The main focus was on the installation of a fully welded new Type 39E boiler, similar to the one already used on the Class 22 and 41 locomotives. The engines also received a rearrangement of the pumps, the characteristic mixing preheater system on the smokebox, and a new roof on the cab. The reconstructed locomotives continued to serve in long-distance traffic for a good decade.
