The VT 18.16 – A Train for Central Germany - Elegant, fast, and luxurious:
The Görlitz express railcar once represented a new travel experience on rails. It was the showpiece of the German Reichsbahn (DR), exuding international flair and a source of great pride not only for railway workers.
Three of these ivory-red rail stars have survived. However, since 2003, no operational example has existed; the ornate trains stood unprotected in the open, threatening to slowly deteriorate. Then former Reichsbahn employees and SVT fans stepped in and founded a non-profit limited liability company (GGmbH) in 2019. Since then, a great deal of passion and expertise have been put into restoring an entire train to its former glory and making it a living legend.
The project's motto is "A Train for Central Germany" and is intended to express the connection to the Central German region. And as an "ambassador to Europe," this racer will remind you of the great era of luxurious international trains.
Take a journey back to an era with the new Märklin model when sleek express railcars like the SVT Görlitz ran trains with illustrious names - as Neptun to Copenhagen, as Vindobona to Vienna, and as Karlex to the exclusive spa town of Karlovy Vary.
Prototype: Class VT 18.16 diesel express railcar train (SVT Görlitz type), in the condition of the refurbished museum set by SVT Görlitz gGmbH. Based on the design of the German Reichsbahn of the GDR (DR/DDR) from the 1960s and 1970s, as a flagship for international express service. 4-part unit. 1 VTa power car, 1 VMc intermediate car with dining area and kitchen, 1 VMd intermediate car, 1 VTb power car.

Model: 4-car unit. With mfx+ digital decoder and extensive sound and light functions. Controlled high-performance propulsion with a flywheel in a power car, all four axles driven via cardan shafts. Traction tires. Standard LED interior lighting, driver's cab lighting, driver's console lighting, engine room lighting, kitchen area lighting, and wall lamps in the dining room, all digitally controllable. Triple headlights that change with the direction of travel, two red tail lights, and interior lighting in conventional operation, digitally controllable. All lighting with maintenance-free warm white and red light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Multi-part interior fittings. Guided, multi-pole, current-carrying special couplings between the vehicles. Pickup switch with direction-dependent power supply via the front power car. With buffer storage. Many separately applied details. Replica of the automatic coupling at both ends (not functional). Minimum radius for travel: 360 mm.
Length of the 4-car set: approximately 113 cm.
Märklin is supporting the reconstruction of this legendary railcar with a donation of €25,000.
