From 1971, the German Federal Railroad put 398 series 218 locomotives into service and used them in front of both passenger and freight trains. They are used on most non-electrified routes and can reach a top speed of 140 km/h with an output of 1,840 kW. Locomotives are currently still in service at the Ulm, Kempten and Mühldorf am Inn locations.
