The BR 023 was a real universal genius. It carried local, express and express trains. Occasionally you could even see them in the freight train service. The new Bundesbahn locomotive series 023 (up to 1968: BR 23) was still active in Era IV. On December 31, 1971, 76 machines were in the maintenance inventory and, without exception, stationed in three depots (Saarbrücken, Kaiserslautern and Crailsheim).
