Note on the minimum radius of the BR 01: The models of the BR 01 steam locomotive are technically suitable for operation from a minimum radius of R 360 mm. For optimal running characteristics, we recommend use on track with a radius of 420 mm or greater.

Information about the prototype

Parallel to the Class 01, the German Reichsbahn developed the closely related Class 02. From 1925 onwards, a direct comparison between the two-cylinder twin-cylinder design (Class 01) and the four-cylinder compound design (Class 02) was conducted in daily operation at the Erfurt, Hamm P, and Hof locomotive depots to determine which was the more suitable locomotive class for the German Reichsbahn. Due to design flaws in the steam passages, the Class 02 locomotives could not fully exploit the advantages of compound technology compared to the Class 01. The additionally higher ongoing maintenance costs ultimately led to the decision to give preference to the Class 01 in series production. The ten locomotives of the BR 02 class were rebuilt into BR 01 locomotives between 1937 and 1942 at the Reichsbahn repair works in Meiningen and renumbered as 01 011 (formerly 02 001) and 01 233-241 (formerly 02 002-010). In this configuration, all ten locomotives were in service with the Deutsche Bundesbahn (German Federal Railway). The last to be withdrawn from service was 001 234-4 in 1972 at the Hof depot.
