Note on the minimum radius of the BR 01: The models of the BR 01 steam locomotive are technically suitable for operation from a minimum radius of R 360 mm. For optimal running characteristics, we recommend use with a track radius of 420 mm or greater.
Information about the prototype
Before the BR 01 series gained its reputation as "the" German express train locomotive, the companies Borsig (01 001-008) and AEG (01 009-010) delivered a total of ten pre-production locomotives to the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft (DRG). The first of these was the still-preserved 01 008, which was handed over to the DRG on January 10, 1926. However, these locomotives were ahead of their time, as many lines and locomotive depots were not yet equipped for an axle load of 20 tons. Consequently, their operating routes were very limited in the first years of service. This prolonged the testing of the new locomotives. The most noticeable difference compared to the later production locomotives was that the first ten 01s had a significantly longer cab. Furthermore, there were differences in the constructive design of the frame as well as many other details.
