INFORMATION ABOUT THE PROTOTYPE
The 26.4 m long express train cars were introduced before the fast train cars of the same length. Around 1950, the German Federal Railway (DB), together with several wagon manufacturers and led by the Wegmann company, began developing new four-axle passenger coaches for regional and long-distance service. After the construction of three 26.4-meter-long prototype coaches with center and end entrances, this design was finalized. At the end of 1951, the first order for 500 of these coaches was placed with 15 coachbuilding companies. In the following years, further orders for 245 coaches were added, with delivery continuing until early 1955. The two basic types were the mixed-class AB coach and the single-class B coach. From the latter type, various push-pull control cars were developed to meet traction requirements, and coaches with luggage and dining compartments were also developed for operational reasons. The running gear (Bogie, Minden/Deutz design) and the structural design are fundamentally the same for all types.
