The rapid modernization of the Austrian electric locomotive fleet began with the commissioning of the first “Taurus” locomotive series 1016 in the summer of 1999. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also purchased for AC operation at 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz. By 2006, 282 Class 1116 locomotives had entered service. They are approved for speeds of 230 km/h and have an output of 6,400 kW. The Railjet is an important component of European long-distance transport, connecting not only important cities in Austria but also international destinations. Locomotives 1116.201–251 were adapted at Siemens in Munich for the Railjet services introduced in December 2008. 1116 238 received the necessary equipment in May 2011.
