Car set with two passenger cars and one baggage car of the Sonnblick Railway.

Cogwheel railways, with their unique combination of mountain scenery and daring routes featuring numerous bridges and tunnels, exude a very special fascination. The train's movement is achieved by a cogwheel engaging with a rack located in the center of the track, as the ordinary friction between wheel and rail is insufficient for the steep gradients. On cogwheel railways of the so-called mixed system, where friction sections alternate with rack sections depending on the gradient, the tractive force is provided by a single locomotive. The Alps are home to a particularly large number of privately owned cogwheel railways, which are very popular with tourists from all over the world.
