In 2019, the ÖBB started an upgrade program for the renewal of the double-decker trains (DOSTO). This means that around 100 cars will be optimized to modern Cityjet standards by 2023. The modernization includes, among other things, on-board WLAN, new seat covers, multi-purpose areas in each intermediate car with more space for bicycles, prams and luggage, as well as newly installed rest areas.

In May 2022, halfway through the ongoing DOSTO upgrade program, electric locomotive 1116 181 was painted in the Cityjet design. With this, ÖBB is setting an important example for attractive offers in public transport. The locomotive is not only used in front of the Cityjet trains, but also in regular passenger and freight transport.
