At the beginning of the 1970s, the gastronomic supply in the DR's inland express trains was to be improved. In addition, many of the pre-war dining cars still in use were due for decommissioning. The DR therefore examined the procurement of new dining cars. A delivery by the wagon construction of the GDR was out of the question for capacity reasons, so the only alternative was production in DR-Raw. Although the Mitropa factory in Gotha had already built six cars from older vehicles as "Reko cars" in 1960, it was decided to create a new design based on the Bghw cars manufactured in Halberstadt. In the meantime, these were completely new buildings and no longer contained any old parts. A total of 50 of the vehicles designated as WRge were built in two series in 1973 (20) and 1977 (30). They wore the typical wine-red paintwork of Mitropa with four-language addresses, but without the decorative lines previously used. The only difference between the two series was the two windows in the kitchen wing, which were intended to improve the lighting conditions in the second series. With a top speed of 140 km/h and multi-voltage heating, the cars could be used internationally and thus also reached destinations in Germany and CSSR. In 1989, after most of the carriages had been converted, just five original dining cars in red paintwork were still in use. Although the dining cars were to receive the new design number 541, they were completely phased out by 1993. Due to their short length and robust furnishings, many found new homes on museum railways.
